    hello from massachusetts

Well, I recently (last week) started on playing the pipes (PC, for probably whats gonna be a year), and, once I'm on the pipes for a bit, will be getting on my local band. As such, I'll be looking for the traditional uniform of the pipers, which brings me here. I'll most likely be picking up things bit by bit, and will be purchasing my pipes at christmas I'll have the money for em then). But, as I am new to the whole clan community, I am browsing & getting as much info from helpful folks like yourself. I'll probably be looking at purchasing a kilt by July, a sporran august, and so on, monthly, until I've gotten what I will need. Question is, how does one choose a quality kilt, and, who are reputable dealers, fairly inexpensive, etc? The more I know, the more questions I'm sure I'll have, but, any advice now is a great help. Thanks!

First of "welcome aboard"!!!! Secondly, I am sure the myriad of pipers on this board are going to jump in and help you out!

Read posts on the Kiltmakers' forum to get a sense of what makes a good kilt. Depending on where you are in Massachusetts, you might not be too far from Barb Tewksbury, One of our forum members and author of the book "The Art of Kiltmaking". I have one of her works of art and you will not find a finer kilt, pay what you will. I'm sure you'll get advice from your band, if they haven't already given it to you. If you are going for the band uniform they may have an in with some suppliers for their uniform items.

    BTW, Welcome to X-Marks.

    oldsoldier,

First, find out exactly what the band you will be joining requires in the way of a uniform. My pipe band buys their kilts and some accessories at J. Higgins.

Here is a link to the J. Higgins website:

I would think the best thing to do is to find out what the band requires in the way of a uniform, and take a look at some of the sponsors links I am sure you will find something suitable.
