I am with Ron on this one, Phil. You ARE a braver man than he or I. I have had a good sewing machine for over 20 years and I still cannot get the tension 'thing' sorted (I can fill a bobbin, however)!

Your first attempt, and surely not your last, is magnificent and the County Clare a perfect choice. Congratulations.

My heartiest congratulations! Is this what you're going to do after you retire from NIC? Looking forward to seeing you at the Spokane Highland Games.

Hamish, thanks for those kind words but its a five yard kilt for two reasons - it has 5 yards of tartan in it and it looks pretty good from about 5 yards away The pleats are not as sharp as the work of our truly talented kilt makers - but I do count it a good first effort.

Thanks Kiltman - If I took up kilt making for a living I'd starve to death - but I suppose it would keep me off the streets... I can't wait to see you in Spokane, I want to pick your brain after your adventures at Kilt Kamp!

I'm very impressed, Phil. Both at the result and at your bravery for jumping in as you did. I just inherited a sewing machine. I've got a lot of material lying around now. You could be my inspiration.

    Outstanding!

After having made four or five kilts of my own, I find I am my own worst critic. When I look at them, I see the faults. When others seem them, they are astounded. There are very few outside of XMarks that could tell the difference from a store bought or professionally made kilt. Congratulations.
