2008 Nor Cal Burns' Night Supper

Get Ready! Plan Ahead! Mark your Calendars!

The X Marks the Scot Nor Cal Rabble Burns’ Night Supper will be January 26, 2008 (the last Saturday of January and the day after Robert Burn's birthday) and held in the Scott’s Valley CA, just next to Santa Cruz.

We have made arrangements to secure a bigger and nicer facility than the one we had last year.

way2fractious took a few pictures of the place and we think it’s a winner.

    http://s37.photobucket.com/albums/e7...t%2008%20Prep/

Last year’s dinner was a potluck with all the traditional Scottish foods (including haggis), a whisky tasting, a piper, live music for dancing (including a SCD!), "Address to the Lasses", "The Lasses' Response", “The Immortal Memory”, and of course the poetry of Robert Burns . For those who missed it, here is a thread with pictures from last year:

    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=23902

Our Planning Committee will be posting updates here as we work out details. We would love to hear from those interested in attending, helping out, or who have thoughts about the event last year.

Looking for forward to a evening of fun that would have made Robert Burns’ proud!

    Cheers

Jamie and 2008 Nor Cal Burns' Night Planning Committee

For our 2008 Burns' Night Supper we have a place and a date. It would great if we could get a rough idea of who among our forum is planning on attending.
Please post and let us know, also indicate if you are interested in reciting/performing any of Burns' Work (Selkirk Grace, Address to a Haggis, etc) or one of the other pieces (Immortal Memory, etc.)

For the record the F-H.C.A.G. would like to recite "John Barleycorn" to start off the Scotch Tasting. We also have an interesting idea for the "Toast to the Lassies" and "Lassies Response" but I need to check with my Burns' Night mentor.

    Cheers

    Jamie

The Luminous Joan and I are so competely *there*.

Casey has asked several times, and I'm sure he will attend. Kathy and Lisa from the band are on board with husbands. Not sure if PiperGeorge will respond to this thread as he doesn't look at X-Marks all *that* much but I have no doubt that George and Gwen and George's Mum will come out.

Let's see....that's 7, plus PiperGeorge, Gwen and Jacoba....ten folks, right there.

1.) I'm on board for providing the music; Lisa and Kathy and I
2.) have excess PV tartan and large red tablecloths for 3, 8 foot long tables
3.) I once again will make haggis for 30, or if someone else wants to try haggis, will do the cock 'o leekie soup.

George would dissolve into howls with gnashing of teeth if he couldn't be our piper and pipe in the haggis!

I can be called upon to read or recite or toast as I am a natural Ham. But then, I got to do that a lot last year, so I'm more than happy to let another soul "stand and deliver!"

A thought.... If anyone is thinking about flying in from out-of-town for this event, it would be good to let the Committee know ASAP, as I *believe* there is talk of making arrangments for a place to stay near to the venue, as well as some activity on the following Sunday. Getting a handle on how many non-local people would be out for such an event would be really helpful.

Note that if you decide to come out for this event on Saturday, you are within a couple of hours drive to a number of well-known and interesting things to do/visit.

San Francisco......need I say more? If you need ideas for things to do in San Francisco, there are ten of us here that can help you out! From the Symphony (they're doing Mahler and Messaien, the Friday night before our Burns Night) to a tour of Alcatraz Island, to searching down the tracks of the Beat Generation Poets http://www.citylights.com/ to French Bread and chowder at Fishermans Wharf....

From a lovely stroll (kilted, of course) around Angel Island, to the Exploratorium for the kids.... maybe the Maritime Museum http://www.maritime.org/index.htm where you get to go aboard a REAL WWII submarine http://www.maritime.org/pamphome.htm ........a walk along the beach to watch the windsurfers, dinner at 5-star restaurants, the best Irish Bar with the best music outside of Galway (http://www.theploughandstars.com/...though I'm sure some here would contest that)

    You like Art Museums?
The Asian Art Museum http://www.asianart.org/...the DeYoung http://www.thinker.org/deyoung/...SFMOMA...http://www.sfmoma.org/

    You like Jazz?

    Yoshi's..http://www.yoshis.com/
    Pearls..http://www.jazzatpearls.com/jazz/

How about coming down to see Alan H and TimC's stompin' grounds and checking out what local talent, or **ahem** has-been that you remember from *then*... is playing at the Little Fox? http://www.foxdream.com/ Maria Muldaur (remember her?) is playing on January 25th!

You want a good waterfront bar...I don't mean a tourist spot, I mean a real waterfront bar alongside a boatyard to hang out, watch the boats go by, draink Guinness and eat chowder when the guys that bust paint all day come in after work and talk about ....whatever? http://www.sfboatworks.com/

    maybe catch a Forty-Niners Game?

I bet you can think of something to do...

    Santa Cruz...
The surfing museum, beach walks in JANUARY?..yes!.. http://www.santacruzsurfingmuseum.org/

Monterey Bay sail/charter on Chardonnay http://www.chardonnay.com/charters/

A drive up the coast to the nude beach http://gocalifornia.about.com/cs/clo...l_nb_ctysc.htm......aaaahhh...I mean Ano Nuevo State Park, to hike out and see the worlds largest colony of elephant seals...http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=523...if you're hot to do this, let us know EARLY, the tours book up *really* fast. You'll need at least a months, notice, maybe 6 weeks. I'm serious!

    Roaring Camp: http://www.roaringcamp.com/...great for kids!

Santa Cruz has a number of co-op Art Galleries...http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...172/ai_3116795

Kuumbwa Jazz Center...Santa Cruz Symphony... Even the tacky old Santa Cruz Beach and Boardwalk, which has a REAL roller-coaster if you're a roller-coaster nut. http://www.beachboardwalk.com/....also great for kids!

Panache and the F-H.C.A.G. know Santa Cruz inside out and backwards!

Monterey and Carmel (I grew up in Carmel, so I know that town inside out and backwards! )

    The Monterey Bay Aquarium: http://www.mbayaq.org/

If anyone is interested I would be happy to do an afternoon walking/driving tour of the old Mexican-Spanish Adobes in Monterey, with a visit to Mission Carmel, possibly the prettiest Spanish Mission in all of California.

http://www.carmelmission.org/welcome.htm This would appeal to serious history buffs.

We can also drop in on the Weston Gallery http://www.westongallery.com/, the actual photography gallery owned and run by Edward Weston (no longer alive) and his family. If you're an art nut, then Carmel is , well....... You will see originals by the Westons and Ansel Adams here....

and drop in at one of Clint Eastwoods "digs", The Hogs Breath Inn http://www.hogsbreathinn.net/.. for a sandwich or coffee, or the place where Clint almost ran me over in a red Mercedes, when I was in high school, http://www.missionranchcarmel.com/, coincidentally the place where my mother and father had their first date in 1956.

    There's lots to do!

Since the Hall is finalized and we need specific details on who is attending and how they would like to contribute I started a new thread:

    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/n...x.html?t=32566

    I will close this one.

    Cheers
