Pics from the CENTRAL NY SCOTTISH GAMES

These aren't really exciting pics but here are a few shots I took at the games. The weather was fantastic and the setting for the games (Long Branch Park, Liverpool, NY) was beautiful. I tried haggis for the first time. Not bad...kind of livery with a bit of a spicy bite. I also got a bit of poison ivy but it was my fault. I ignored the warning signs posted on the lawn. All in all a pretty fun day.

    Kiddie cabers:

The heavy games took place right next to the river. Awesome local!

If you had that much shade you would have rested, and that would have got you into more trouble. Man, it was hot on Saturday.

Gotta love poison ivy and haggis, yum yum.

    Nobody's carrying a sword.

As a blade collector I can't stand most of the cheap crappy swords and knives sold at highland games. I guess I can understand it, though. A decent sword starts in the $500.00 range and I'm sure a non-collector at a Scottish festival would rather spent that kind of money on kilts and related items.

This is the first year I've missed those games in quite a while and I'm still bummed. I love that park.

Thanks for the pics. Headed to Hunter Mountain this weekend?

Unfortunately, no, I won't be going to the Hunter Mountain Festival this year. My wife and I have attended four Scottish festivals this summer and we're taking a short break. I believe we'll be going to Altamont over Labor Day weekend, though.

Not to detour too far from the wonderful pics on this thread but you made me think of the good quality of the swords for sale at Fergus. I think it was two years ago, somebody can help me here, that the first good vendor showed up. This year, I can't recall any flea market level vendors there.

I think that's a lesson to all the games promoters. Once the better quality vendors are there, they show up the poorer quality sites. I felt it was a better event because of that.

I'm also hoping to make it to the Twin Tiers kilt night when they start up again. I used to live just a few miles from Chenango Bridge so I'm very familiar with the area.

It's nice to hear there are some games that have quality blades for sale. I'd be happy to see just one vendor selling a decent sgian dubh.
