James, I got a copy of "The Art of Kiltmaking" from Matt Newsome's site. It is the first edition but I wish I had read it before ever buying a kilt.

    http://www.scottishtartans.org/

I also saw copies on amazon, for about four to five times the price Matt is asking.

I bought a second-hand kilt that turned out to be so thick and heavy, I just could not wear it. Decided to take it apart and use less than half the cloth to make something wearable. Luckily, the top of the pleats was intact, otherwise remaking would have been impossible, and I am delighted with the result of my own handiwork!!!

Did you use the other half of the fabric for another kilt?

    How about some photos.

I haven't made my first kilt yet but I will soon, I have the fabric.

A question: has any one here removed the excess material on a Stillwater Standard (or heavyweight) and stabilized it? I know it seems like a lot of work, but I have several inexpensive kilts I would wear more often if they had less material in the back. Just wondering...if you have, please share your experiences.

    Thanks,
    Moosedog

And how stiff the fell of a kilt feels will also depend on the type and amount of interfacing used in the fell after the pleats have been cut out.

I sincerely hope so for your sake, AND SINCERELY HOPE NOT FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD'S SAKE.

I've cut out the excess material in two of my kilts....both of the heavy wool 7-8 yarders. I also cut out the excess in Piper Georges 8 yard kilt, even though his was made of 11 ounce wool.

The 10 ounce wool-poly, 6 yard knife-pleat that I made for myself...didn't cut that out. I thought about cutting out the excess in the 6-yard 13 ounce X-Marks tartan kife pleat kilt that I made but after wearing it twice decided that it wasn't THAT bulky and I was fine with it.
