If he goes the Dunbar PC route I suggest an Abbott PC reed. Great combination, my Pipe Sgt. put me on to them, I don't have problems with finicky reeds that I had before and can take alot of air with out shutting off.

I've been using Greg's reeds in a Dunbar PC since the North American Academy of Piping & Drumming session I attended in July. He actually tuned the reed to the chanter. Interesting, he was unable to get one of his reeds to work in my Soutar chanter!

I use a Walsh practice chanter, regular length. Works great with the Walsh reed or with my current Gibson reed. Cost $65 US when I got it. Made in Canada, too.

But he should check with the teacher before ordering. While not common, some teachers do try to get their students to all purchase matching chanters. The teacher may also have a line on some good deals on equipment. Not always, but sometimes the case.
