Good stuff, bdrmbrwns!!! It's a great feeling to wear stuff that YOU (or someone close to you) has made.

    The X-Kilt PDF

    Hey Alan-

I still get at least 25 hits on average each month on the instructions since I started hosting it for you.

    Who's downloading and not sewing?"

Downloaded and just purchased 5yds each of cotton twill 60in wide in black and "potting soil" from Jo-Ann's. 50% off red tag price sale. It'll be going in the wash soonest. Planning in going with wide and narrow aprons for each color.

Does anyone have instructions for doing UK style slash pockets? I think I can suss it out on a knife pleated but a box kilted has me stumped.

Did you know I was at the Ben Lomond Games and this way2fractious dragged me over to this nice woman who'd made an X-kilt for her kid, and she's never even posted here.

She was talking about making X-Kilts for her sons entire PLATOON.

The word is getting around. I bet at least 50-100 more X-Kilts have been made that we've never even heard of.

Here's how I would do it, the quick and dirty way. I'd use the tops of the underapron pleats for the pockets. This is all done before sewing on the waistband. Instead of sewing from waist to fell along the edge of either apron, leave the top unstitched to form a gap long enough to get your hand through -- remember some of that distance will become the waistband seam allowance -- then stitch from the bottom of the gap to the fell, reinforcing the top of the stitching which is now the bottom of the pocket opening.

Inside, with the underapron pleat folded flat, mark a pocket shape starting from the waist and ending at the bottom of the gap -- however big you want the pocket to be, constrained only by the width of your underapron pleat. Sew the pleat together along that line. You may not be able to sew all the way up to the edge of the apron, but get as close as you can, and reinforce the ends of that stitching. When you sew on the waistband, you will be closing off the top edge of your pocket.

Viola, slash pockets! There are fancier ways to do this, but it should suffice for an XKilt.

I've had the fabric for several months now. But between baby, cleaning my house, both my husband's parents in the hospital, cleaning their house, watching their dogs, and all that stuff, I haven't even had time to put it in the washer (let alone do mundane things like sleeping...) lol
