    NYC Kilt Night for January

I want to put out the question about how to celebrate next month. Should we do a Burns Night? If so, with a pre-established group? Do our own thing?

One suggestion I would have for a pleasant, affordable event would be the Burns Night held by the local chapter of Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. It includes an address to the haggis, and munchies-no dinner, with lots of dancing, and they are VERY accommodating to newbies! The admission for this past year's event was ten dollars.

    What other thoughts/options?

It would be so cool if you decide to come to the NY Branch RSCDS Burns Night in January. Our highland dance group, New York Celtic Dancers, is going to be performing there.
Sorry I wasn't able to make the Dec.8th get-together. I bet you all had a great time!

Actually I would be very happy if we did a get together anytime besides Burns night. We do some catering around that time but I have 11 Address' that I am doing from the 18th to the 27th so it's a busy time for me.

So would you be free to do one for us on the 28th?

At this point, I'm going to ask for some feedback. The concept of honoring Burns (and through him the Scottish culture which has given us the kilt) in some fashion at a January meet seems to have a lot of support. The question is how.

The Country Dancing Society dinner I had put out as a suggestion has not had any response from you guys. So I am going to ask which form you prefer it to take:

    A) Do you want to gather for dinner, drinking and carousing?

    B) Do you wish for a dinner and drinking with the chance of dancing?

In either event, I propose having the meet on Saturday, January 19th. Place and time still to be determined. Step up and declare!

So I've been thinking about this since it was posted and here's my thoughts:

I think it might be fun and something quite different for some of us to attend a Burns night type celebration. I like the idea that was mentioned before... an informal address, munchies and dancing. I'm all for just a regular kilt night out or doing this because although I've heard it described, I have never been to real Burns night.

I have never done any Scottish Country Dance but I would be content just socializing. I really enjoy watching Highland Dance performed (Scottish dancing videos on YouTube got me hooked, LOL) so that would be fun.

Kilts I have...but none of the other traditional garb.
I'm just wondering how I'd fit in.

I can't speak about all places. There was another Burns dinner I went to where tie and jacket seemed mandatory. As to the one I had suggested, no worries needed about attire. I dressed as you've seen me, polo/sweater with the kilt, so you'll be fine the way you dress. At the last one, there were even quite a few guys there in p**nts

Sorry, except for the scotch poured on the haggis, there was no booze.

I could go either way as well, but I was leaning toward the Scottish dance society fest. That is, until the ready availability of spirits was called into question. These things tend to be much more fun when folks are relaxed and happy, and we all know where that comes from. I'll run with the herd, but on reflection, my inclination would be to go where the best food and drink can be had.
