    Kilt wearer banned...

A kilt wearer was stunned when bosses at his favourite pub told him he couldn't wear his kilt. Paul Robson no longer drinks in the Blackie Boy, in Newcastle, where he has enjoyed a pint for 17 years. Robson has Scottish relatives and has worn his kilt every Friday night for two years. But managers at the Blackie Boy banned him because it has a "smart dress code" and says kilts are fancy dress. (Source: The Northern Echo.co.uk)
Probably more of a personality issue than a dress standard i would presume....

Whoa...what? Ok, some bars have dress codes like "no shirt, no shoes, no service" but to say "Smart dress only" is absurd! These guys are insane if they think that helps their business.

Well, I know of one bar I won't be stopping at if I'm ever in New Zealand.

I'm surprised some kilt-wearing mob with pitchforks and torches didn't show up...

Didn't someone post the thread on closing pubs in UK? No wonder.

Okay. I would have thought that I'd have been better than your average USAian on British/Commonwealth colloquialisms, but I've never heard anyone make a distinction between "fancy dress" and "smart dress". Would one of you folks from over the pond help me out?

    Thanks,

    Brian

I'm afraid that report is over eight years old, Tommy! Howie was making pockets for mobile phones, etc. in his '21st Century Kilts' some time before that article was published - it wasn't exactly hot news then.

    Take care,
    Ham.

    Aye Ham
I thought the price was somewhat exaggerated, however I would say that perhaps the reporter has done that, as you know reporters seem to never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

I think though the point is that it seems a bit crazy that a pub would ban someone for wearing the kilt, when you see the photo I think he looks fine, save for the fact that he is wearing brown boots with a black belt and sporran.
