Canadians in tug of war, France, 1917

circa 1915: A Highland military recruitment band sit outside a recruitment office with their pipes and drums. The kilt began as a practical, toga-like garment and developed into a 'plaid' consisting of a skirt and drape over the shoulder. By the 17th century kilts were accepted as Scottish national dress and the plaid became a separate item. Traditional kilts are made from seven and a half yards of pleated material, with half a yard unpleated at the ends which are crossed over and fastened with a pin or buckle. 20th August 1955: Private Grainger of the Black Watch checks his uniform in the primping mirror at the Black Watch Depot, Queen's Barracks, Perth, watched by Regimental Sergeant-Major Howard Wharton. The Black Watch, 'Am Freiceadan Dubh' in Gaelic, was founded in 1739 and a cairn marks the spot between the Tay Bridge and Aberfeldy where the regiment was first mustered in 1740. It was the first regiment to introduce Highland dress as a uniform and wear kilts in the traditional dark tartan. They also earned the right to wear red hackles in their regimental caps for courageous conduct in Flanders in 1795. These photos were culled from www.bobdunsire.com (a forum for pipers not all that unlike this one except that it seems to require membership to view), which turned up when I was looking for images of the Tyneside tartan without much luck. As indicated posts, here are one each from WWI and WWII.

Here are some photos I found online today, most did not come with discriptions.

Nine of the ten boys interviewed by Sir Ernest Shackleton (left, foreground).
James Marr is in his kilt, obscuring one of the other Scouts. The other adult may be Percy Everett, but which Scout is Patrol Leader Mooney?

I think this ine is an example of a hand painted photo. I say this as looking at the face it really does seem like a photo and not a painting.
