Like to get one some day.
The 79th sporran doesnt look anything like that. Here are some notes I have on an original:

    79th New York Sporran

    Overall: 22 x 11 in. ( 55.9 x 27.9 cm )

    Leather, hair, cotton

Leather, hair, and cotton sporran; red leather cover, two belt loops, and pocket on back of bulbous, brown leather pouch stitched to back of another brown leather pouch that has scalloped, fringed black leather cover, skin patch suspending horsehair flap, and three black cotton laces with leather and brown horsehair tassels on front.
Yes, the sporrans did have a pouch in them. They were brown kid leather flaps sewn to the red kid leather back. There were two leather belt loops stitched above the pouch dead center behind the cantle.

Here are some pictures I photo shopped together for a quick visual of them....all in all that sporran has a vague idea of the originals but is nothing like them.

    ...yay for the 79th ith:

Fan that I am of the horsehair sporran, I think today's commercially available lot are rather cheap looking, compared to those we see in photos of 50-100 years ago. I say this because they appear to be considerably shorter than used to be worn. In the period I'm referring to the horsehair sporran reached to just the edge of the kilt, or perhaps two inches below the hem of the kilt. Likewise the tassels were longer-- almost as long as the sporrans sold today. Today's short horsehair sporrans lack, in my opinion, the elegance of those worn fifty plus years ago.

Now that is a BEAUTY! I especially like the way the hair tapers naturally at the bottom, rather than be cut to shape. This looks more like what MoR is talking about.

I just dug this picture up from an old file.

This is Robert Clark, a soldier that served in the 79th NY Highlanders. Here he is wearing his 79th sporran with his civilian Caledonian club clothing in the early 1860s.

I think that if it was a current regiment that still wore the badge, then maybe I can see where it might be construed as disrespectful, but to wear one that is no longer worn..I see it more as keeping the tradition and memory alive. Sort of a memorial of sorts if you will. I myself wear the uniforms of (WWI and WWII mind you) the Liverpool Scottish, which no longer exist except in the cadet training form. So as long as your not trying to pass yourself off as a member, then I don't see it as a problem.
    Just my tuppence worth.
Oh yeah...and I ALWAYS think there's room for more horse hair sporrans in the world!!
