    Wearing a kilt to Work

While kilted in the pub last weekend, I was discussing with my friend who was also kilted why he never wears the kilt to work. I last wore my kilt to work last St. Andrew's Day.
Although wearing the kilt is definately the best attire to wear when socialising or out for the day, wearing it at my work is not always practical. My friend agreed that he has seldom wore his kilt at work as he finds it a bit impractical.
Both of us have jobs which do not require any physical work but even so wearing it every day would be a bit of a chore with so much attention directed towards you, this is always the problem when you wear the kilt, I suppose you could say that it is a good problem to have.. I would love to be in a job where I could wear it every day and I envy the individuals that can do so.

I think and my friend agrees that wearing the kilt at work could well be a distraction as you would be inundated with questions and could not get on with your work. It would be great if more people wore the kilt at work and you could get on with your work without the plaudits and encouragement from others who would love to be kilted. It is a sort of chicken and egg situation where the more people wearing the kilt is great but how do you get more people to do so thus leaving you alone to carry on with your work.

I must add here that I have never had any problems being kilted at work or outside work

My job requires a uniform, but on days when we're allowed to wear civilian clothes I've worn my ABU (US Air Force pattern camo) Kilt. Most people like seeing the kilt. It's a good conversation starter.

I don't know about your job and workplace so this might not be relevant. I work as staff at a local Community College (roughly equivalent to the old UK polytechnic) and am kilted every day. From day one I have had very little attention and nobody seems distracted by my wearing a kilt. I think if I turned up in slacks now, that would cause more of a stir than the kilt does.

Even after reading the posts here which have taught me how exceptional kiltwearing is, even in Scotland, I have to confess some surprise that concern about excessive attention would crop even there.

One member of the forum (cessnapilot) is a lawyer there and normally wears a kilt even before the bar, I believe. So I would hope that an office environment could handle it!

Really depends on whether or not you interact with customers everyday or just interact with workers. If it just other workers (peers), then eventually the novelty wears off and you can continue your work without distraction. If you are dealing with customers, then you have new faces everyday and will undoubtedly get questions.

I had close to three years kilted at my last place of employment. People just got used to it, it was not a big deal to my co-workers anymore. There were no distractions in fact my co-workers looked forward to seeing me in the kilt, the comments lessened as time went on.

The only time I ever wore the kilt to work was when I had to come in over the millenium year in case of any problems. I worked in a financial place then and they were strict about what you wore - even had it all written down in case you didn't know. Mind you I had a lot of crawling about under desks in that job so at least the p@nts stopped the carpet burns!

My current job requires a uniform, so wearing a kilt is out of the question. That and a lack of kilts (that fit) prevent me from wearing a kilt full time. I'm wearing my kilt more and more outside of work.

Honestly, I haven't been ask many questions or received comments one way or the other. The occasional comments at the grocery store have all been short and positive.

Another plus is that my wife fully supports my kilt wearing.

I thikn McMurdo is straight on. If you wear it too rarely, it might be a novelty and you'll always have someone interrupting your day to talk about it. But if you wear it often enough the novelty will wear off and it'll just be another day in the office for them and for you, too.

Since my job is the highland attire business-EVERYDAY is kilted. I will note on the side that it is amazing how here in Atlanta, even out on the streets, no one minds. I consider being kilted and out and about free advertising since I will get the "Where did you get that" question from time to time. Even when I go to the hip/dangerous part of town "EAST ATLANTA", no one (Not even the gangsters and homeboyz) gives me a 2nd look. Its even correctly commented on from time to time there "Yo-That kilt is workin'-Where can I get one". Atlanta and San Fran really are 2 great kilt friendly cities. It probably helps that we have a HUGE Celt community here and a really big, well advertised highland games.......
