I dropped by the REI when in Denver hoping to see the kilt - when I asked about they looked at me like I had lobsters crawling out of my ears. Despite it being on their website no one at the store had a clue about them. These are the yetties of the kilt world!

Without the pleats it looks a bit like a skirt to be honest. Imagine you'd sacrifice some movement ability as well.

Good luck with the project though

I realize that the third picture shows that I was merely commenting on the first two pictures.

I guess the project didn't go. I looked on MH's website and couldn't find it. A quick check of google shopping found some but no real detail on 1st or second gen or what the sizes are. I would like to have one for the summer's in CO for sure.

I have had the new version kilt for six months now and it wears much better than the old for my rather long stride. The "modesty snap" that is supposed to hold the inner apron to the rear pleats for climbing comes unsnapped at the first raise of a knee to climb. My Large fits loose on my 34" waist, and has ample room to get over my 40" hips. Mountain Hardwear's conical waist design is present in this garment as has been in their shorts. The pleats allow for my rather long stride far better than the shorts or version one - version one was better than shorts BTW. Think of version one as a very generous A-line skirt. My version one developed sort of gathers from wear and while sitting. The only gripe I have is the "side pockets" do not really sit equally on the side but are slightly to the rear, making the contents bounce and twist off the thighs when walking briskly. The 21.75" length is a bit short for a kilt on me (usual 27"), but will work if I let it sit low on the hips.

    StevB,
Now that we have the new version of ELKK the question is what to do with the old one. Mine too has pilled at the seat, something I attibuted to sitting on rocks. I logged 100+ miles one year with that original Mountain Kilt it was so comfortable. But now it gathers dust in my closet.
