    "King Of The Highland Pipers"

It's nice to recover an old treasure every once in awhile. On another thread referencing the late John D. Burgess, I thought I recognized a picture that came up and indeed it was the album cover of his 1976 "The Art Of The Highland Bagpipe". The last time I spun that disc (still in my stacks of old vinyl), I remember how good it sounded, despite the pocks and clicks of the medium.

I decided to see if it was available as a CD or download and found it on Amazon. It actually is both his 1969 album "King Of The Highland Pipers" combined with TAOTHB. Download costs $8.99, probably about what I paid for the one album alone in 1976. CD is also available, I think for $16.99.

Despite how crappy a lot of pipe recordings used to sound, the sound engineers got this one right. Burgess's playing needs no further comment. Great selection of tunes, including piob. If you want to hear "The Geese in the Bog" or "P/M George Allen" the way they're supposed to sound, look no further.

There's a lot of good solo piping discs and downloads out there now but if you're in the market for a good bargain classic, this is it.
