Relevant Latin, for those who might care

    Ligaculum – noun: a kilt

    derived from
Ligare – verb: to bind, tie, or fasten (as in to put on a kilt)

    which gives us
Liga! – imperative command to wear a kilt, may be translated as “Kilt Up!”

    Venter Caledonius – noun: haggis
    Venter Scotius
    Venter Scotus
    or
    Venter Albanius
(depending on your preferred romantic/poetic name for Scotland)

I am available to translate other things into Latin as well (or at least give it the ol’ prep school try).

What is the Latin verb "to wrap"? I'd think that would be a closer word to use for a kilt, while the one used above would be a good reference to flashes and garter ties.

How about a latin translation of the McLean motto of "Virtue is my honour" please.

The word I quoted for kilt is a compound word from the verb “ligare” (to bind tie and fasten, as previously stated) and the noun “culus” (meaning your ****). The related Latin word “Subligaculum” is what the Romans called a loincloth.

For flashes or garter ties, I would suggest “periscelis” or possibly “stroppus” – I’ll look into this a bit and get back to you.

    “Virtue is my honour”
A direct, literal translation would be “Virtus Honorem Meum Est”, however such a literal translation should probably be avoided in favor of the predicate nominative grammatical construction, which would give us “Virtus Honor Meus”.

Ah, the classic Latin class, prep school joke (to let everyone in on the joke):
“Estne volumen in toga an solum tibi libet me videre”
(Is that a scroll in your toga, or are you just happy to see me?)

Oh, that helps! I have been hoping someone would post something of the sort, for a somewhat sardonic signature I use occasionally:

Sub Ligaculum Veritas, or maybe Infra Ligaculum Veritas: "Under the kilt is truth" or in Nyawka: "I gotcher truth, right heah."

OK, that's my evil moment for the week. I managed to make it to Friday.

    :ootd:

Honestly. Mr. Hippie, this is a Family Friendly Forum!

I've always liked the phrase "... et iterum venturus est". Now look up from your cathekism (sp?) and picture the Gorvernator. Indeed back he came.
    Vin gardu pro la sciuroj!
