    A source for paper poppies?

I've been an admirer of the commonwealth practice of wearing a paper poppy in the lapel on 11/11 each year. It's a practice I'd like to adopt and promote here in the US.

Does anyone have a good source for these?

    Thanks!

In the UK poppy day is organized by The Royal British Legion so they could possibly advise you.

    Their web site is:- www.britishlegion.org.uk

They're made of plastic these days, but if you were interested in a large quantity you could contact the Royal Canadian Legion.

If you just wanted one or two, I could mail them to you myself.

Well, the Canadian ones are, anyway. The ones from the British Royal Legion are paper and designed slightly different. Depends which style you prefer more.

Alternatively, I suppose you could make some yourself for that matter... Depends what you want to do with them.

I have a metal poppy lapel badge from the Australian RSA that a friend of mine sent me years ago. I wear it on ANZAC Day, Memorial Daym 1 July (for the Battle of the Somme) and Remembrance Day.

If you want British Legion ones I could keep an eye out for the first ones on sale and send you some. Air mail is usually under one week.

They are only two paper petals, with a plastic stalk -

They always want to give me more poppies than I need - the Legion organised a holiday by the sea for my Dad when he was unable to get out of the house, so I give them folding money.

Let me know your terrestial address in a PM, and how many poppies you'd like, if you want the British ones.

    In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

This order fom has a deadline of Oct 1, but maybe you can sneak in or find the equivalent order form for your state's auxiliary (this one's California).

Or make your own -- there's a drawing on this page, a photo on this page, and instructions for a similar flower (CA state poppy) here. Add a strip of white paper printed with the "In Memoriam" message.

On the other hand, buying them from the various AmLegionAux may support the spirit/intent of the display more than making them yourself.

My intent is to obtain a dozen or so, preferably by making a suitable contribution to a veteran's organization.

I work with a number of people who, I am certain, would appreciate the history and symbology of the poppy.

I would be happy to send you one or two of the Canadian version by post, KD, just end me you postal address by PM. For more than that I suggest you contact the Royal Canadian Legion as suggested by Slohairt. The advantage of the Canadian plastic version -- for you -- will be their longevity. In the UK and Canada, of course, they are annually sold to raise funds for veteran-related organisations.
