    Hi,

I'll friend you on Ravelry if you don't mind. We should start an Xmarks group there.

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

We are always interested, often someone has used a technique that others have not though of using or used it in a different way.

Remember the old saying? "There's honor among (pattern) thieves"?

Ah, Piperdbh! I never thought of it that way, but you've got a point. I don't use a pattern per se, just my leg and foot measurements, cabling I'd like to try and a lot of prayer. So far, everything's seemed to have worked out OK. Pictures to follow soon!

    Hi all-
I learned how to knit several years ago when I was living up in the woods of New Hampshire. Not much else to do if we were trying to behave ourselves. I've done quite a few hats and a scarf or two. But I was just saying to my fiancée last night that I should get back into the hobby again this winter and aim to make a pair of kilt hose. I just joined Ravelry (I'm ebcornell over there) but the amount of info is a bit overwhelming. Can anyone recommend THE most simple set of instructions to start a BASIC pair of socks to get me on the road to proper hose some day in the distant future?
Until then maybe I'll look for a pattern for some garter ties...

I have a pattern for socks with the title 'socks which are simple to knit' and they are just ribbing and then stockinet.

They are fully shaped, though, but without any other complications.

I have the pattern on the computer. I found it typed out on plain paper in an old pattern book, and have used it quite a bit. It uses English 4 ply yarn, but that is available widely now.

However - it is so old that it makes a fairly small sock. Using thicker yarn and larger needles might be advisable, English double knitting or a yarn which usually knits at 6 st to the inch, but knitted tighter, otherwise the socks would wear out quite quickly.

I also have a pattern for knee high with turn over ribbed socks which fit quite nicely - that might do for a second pair.

Let me know if you'd like the patterns and I will send them as a PM.

When I started knitting sicks I found the Knitting Fiends Sock-u-lators handy. The Hour Glass Knee Sockulator takes some simple measurement and prints out a very basic sock pattern. I like this better than the standard Small, Medium or Large patterns. My feet don't fit these standard sizes.

I don't knit, but I do make yarn on a drop spindle from my St. Bernards combings.

I second the sock-u-lators! It's really nice to be able to figure out a pattern with what you have handy.

Legba, that is so cool! I'm a spinner as well and I am starting to save my Aussie's fur to spin. In a couple years maybe I'll have enough for a mitten. ;)
