    A great thread!!

I'm also disappointed with the California tartan. They might have gone with the state colours of blue and gold... but then again, I think that half the states' colours are blue and gold.

The University of California Riverside wears their own tartan, based on the state colours:

The rear of the kilts are sort of ugly because they chose to pleat to the "gold", actually a mustardy yellow. The actual tartan is very nice, with a brilliant lovely blue.

The book World Tartans has an image of the Maine Dirigo tartan. It is quite lovely.

About Maine Dirigo, the book says:

This is a modern tartan designed by Linda Clifford. It was woven by Strathmore for the St Andrew's Society of Maine. There is an earlier Maine tartan dating from 1964.

It also shows Carolina, Georgia, Idaho Centennial, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas Bluebonnet, Vermont, and Washington State.

Cities such as Dunedin, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Tulsa have tartans.

The county of Anne Arundel has its own as well.

Even the US river Chattahoochee has its own tartan.

West Virginia has launched its tartan, I think based on an antique shawl or something. I don't think it has been woven in kilt weight tartan yet. If woven in a nice large kilt-sized sett, it would make up into a very respectable kilt:

About USA tartans, there are several red/white/blue tartans I've seen, all of which look ugly to me.

This is much more successful, using a black background. It's called "American Heritage".

I may be in the minority, but I really like the California tartan.
Many tartans are based on other tartans. I like the fact that it honors both Californians of Scottish ancestry and John Muir, a great Californian.

If the exchange rate gets a little better, I may be able to afford to purchase enough to make a kilt.
