My mom has a set of the kitchen pipes. I'd suggest replacing the chanter reed with an Abbott reed, but otherwise they are good little fun pipes. The Walsh reed that comes with the chanter is a good reed, but too quiet to make the chanter stand out against the drone. Abbott has a real smallpipe sound (as much as any practice chanter reed can, anyway) and makes the instrument much bolder.

Again, though, start with a practice chanter and a teacher. Not trying to burst bubbles, just trying to be actually helpful.

    Kitchen Pipes

I've got to join in. I too have a set of Kitchen pipes, which after years of hard use were getting a little "worn". I sent them back in to Scotts Highland where they were completely reconditioned, and returned as good if not better than new! This at no charge, the vendor was more concerned about his product! I only wish every company was as great to do business with.
