    Question Sporran Storage

It is fast becoming fall and winter. Time for "Stinky" to go into hibernation.

My question is this: What is/would be the best way to store a full mask sporran? As it came from L&M Highland Outfitters (via the Kiltmaker's Apprentice), it was in a plastic bag inside a large cardboard box. This is how I have it currently being stored.

Is this OK? Is there something better to help "keep" the fur and leather from drying out (I know it doesn't happen that fast but....)?

Storing leather or fur in plastic bags is not the best thing for long term storage. The leather cannot "breathe". I'd go with a cloth bag. They sell them for storing ladies purses, or you can use cotton pillow cases. Also, stuff some non-acid tissue in the sporran to help retain its shape.

I wouldn't store it in a plastic bag. My storage of choice is an old pillow case.

    What they said.

Plastic and leather don't mix well. Cloth keeps things happy.

While what passes for my formal sporran (a bargain bunny sporran) isn't anywhere near as interesting,...

I have it in a shoe box and it's full of those cedar balls that they sell to deter moths and other nasty insects...figure that's pretty safe...

So stride into your local dry goods store and walk right up to the clerk and ask, "Do you have cedar balls?"

    Best

That's pretty funny! What I do to store my sporran is very simple- I have a pair of Stillwater Kilts sporran hangers. I hang it in my closet, as if it were just another shirt.

If it were me, I would probably put it into a cloth bag along with some large silica gel (desiccant) packages both inside the sporran and outside as well... Then I'd put that all into a tupperware tub of roughly the right size.

The desiccant is probably not a good idea as it may tend to draw the moisture out of the leather, causing it to dry out over time. As Zardoz, Rocky, and others have suggested a cloth bag (like a pillow case) is your best bet.

What I want to know is why are you "mothballing" your sporran for the winter?
