Great Kilt... which end is up?

Ok, so I'm planning on picking up 5 yards of double width Buchanan hunting tartan. I want a great kilt for, er...ahem, "roleplaying" with the wife (married life is awesome).
How in the name of haggis do you put the thing on? I have delusions of this...

I don't want it falling off at the wrong time, or to look like a soup sandwich. Help a fellow out guys!

That's a wonderful website and shows very well what to do.

In addition, if you want to, you could sew a double row of stitching across the pleated section at the waist using heavy thread. That would hold the pleats. You could sew leather ties at the outer edge of the aprons with a corresponding tie at the other side.

My teacher, Ann Stewart also attached several belt loops onto the back waist, to make it even easier to put on.

You can also sew some belt loops in at the appropriate placed--a chore I wish I'd done when I ordered my own breachan feile. But the illustration show how to do it very well. I think that's how I learned myself. Actually, the pleats really should be somewhat free flowing rather than pressed and sewn, I think.

BTW, Geoffrey (tailor) had one at the Stone Mountain Games with a draw string of sorts sewn in. It looked interesting.

I would definitely sew in the pleats at the waist myself. I also wouldn't recommend 5 yards of double width cloth. 4 yards should be plenty even for a large man. I put 3m (3.3 yards) on once and it was about as much fabric as I could possibly handle. 12-13 oz would be optimal.

I see you partake in the extreme version of Charades in your house. Go for it, doesnt sound like it will stay on long anyway.

My single friends just don't believe me. To quote Captain Hammer,
"I hear if you do it more than once with the same girl, you get to do the really weird stuff."

And thanks for the link guys.

Laird M, I don't think pictures of this are in the spirit of the website.
However,I'll show you the kilt once I get the material and figure it out.

In my experience nothing is "really weird stuff" unless you think it is weird. Basically between two consenting adults it is just good clean fun. Go for it lad.
