First off, great site you have all made here! I've spent, literally hours searching posts and reading up on... well hell all sorts of things. Enough blathering... to it. I'm by no means a "reenactor" but I find a good deal of pride in getting as close as is within my reach (feasibly). I go to quite a few festivals and my group and I shoot for about 1730-1770... right in the jaco-bit time frame. I'm making a pair of old finger style ghillies to replace my dying duds and I'd like to wear something to act as a "sock" so that after the several miles of marching I don't end up limping home... Problem is I'm a bit picky and don't like the idea of wearing the good ole' red and white battle style cloth sewn socks. I try not to look lordly when we go out because you see a whole lot of that. I like to shoot for middle class if a persona was to be pegged. Any insight here without opening a six pack of worm canisters? I appreciate the feedback and look forward to hearing it

First of all, skip the "finger style" multi-tabbed "ghillies." They are a "reenactorism" and not historically correct. Make the more solid moccasin-like "cuarans":

As for hose, the footless style are easy to whip up and have the advantage of wearing your own socks underneath, which can be swapped when they get wet/sweaty.



Cheapo tartan remnants are great for sewing up these hose....

If you are doing a Scot in the Americas, you could utilize a set of Indian leggings as was often done by Scottish troops stationed here.
