    Weight of Tartan - Swatch

I received a swatch for some inexpensive 100% wool tartan material in Black Stewart tartan. The swatch is very soft--almost like lambswool. I measured the set, and I believe it's about 3 1/4", and fairly square, if my guess is correct. My question is, how much does a yard weigh, approximately? Is this 13 oz material? If it's not, how much material would I need to make a different garment, such as a waistcoat? I'm what you'd call a medium-build person, slightly shorter than average.

To make a waistcoat/vest, you'll need about two yards of solid-colored 45" wide fabric, if you plan to make the back from the same fabric as the front. If you're wanting to amke a tartan vest, with the tartan cut on the bias, it will eat up more fabric. I'd say 3 yards should do it, with a good bit of scrap left over.

I can't help you on the weight of the fabric. You might be able to ask the company you got it from.

Thanks for the advice on the waistcoat. The company I bought the fabric from--an online cloth retailer, not a mill--did not know the weight of the fabric. Obviously, it's not heavy. Perhaps I shall have to use the postal scale and do some arithmetic.

If it's soft and woolly it's probably about 10oz

    10 oz it is, then.

That's what it must be then, because it's soft and wooly. FYI: this fabric can be found for $19/60" wide yard at Renaissance Fabrics. It'd make great scarves.

The weight is per yard. If you have 10 oz material, and you have a yard long piece of fabric 54" wide it will weight 10 oz. Heavy weight 16 oz fabric will weigh a pound (16 oz) per yard.
