Thumbs up The die is cast!!!!!!

    Well . . .

    . . . I did it!

I just hung up the phone with my old friend Wilson who is a superb piper (!!!!!) and a member of the Pipe Band I mentioned that is just 20 minutes away. What I did not know is that he is the instructor for the band.

So, he's ordered me my book and a practice chanter (at the reduced band price!) and expects that I'll start lessons next Monday evening. He thinks it will take a couple of years, but says of course that's up to me, as so many of you have pointed out. He says his oldest student ever, and now an excellent bandsman was seventy-nine when he started teaching him.

Now, bonus: no charge for lessons, BUT an expectation that when he thinks I'm good enough, I march with the band, and they even have loaner pipes when the time comes.

Pray for me, gang . . . I think I've lost my nut!

Not paying for lessons and loaner pipes are a wicked good incentive to learn! Congratulations, it really is a rewarding feeling when you start playing your first tune. Just stay out of your head when the frustration comes pouring in. Prayers are on the way...

Great stuff! I am not surprised at the generosity of your friend the piper. My experience has been that the piping community is exceedingly generous, and welcoming. The way is paved. I predict great joy in your future!

That's the same deal my tutor struck with me: learn to play; march with the band!

    Congrats Padre!

Bill, I will want to hear about your progress and experiences. Some time between November and January my son and I will begin lessons. We are doing this as something to share. The instructor, who plays for a celtic rock band, has agreed to take us on as a pair. My son is 13 and I just turned 50. I am counting on my better discipline to keep me at my son's level, at least while we are only using chanters. I am really looking forward to the challenge, adventure, and opportunity before me!
