Napoleonic era 42nd Jacket

Can across this today which is apparently in the Borodino Museum. I was not aware that a 42nd jacket of this era survived. It's in wonderful condition.

My tailor's dialect is poor, But I'll translate it for you guys...

42nd Black Watch (not bad heh...)

This regiment has blue as distinctive color, Which is reserved for ''royal'' regiments. It's buttonholes are in a Jew's Harp shape. The stripes are white and have a red braiding near the edge.


Battalion's companies soldier's coat.
Made from heavy red wollen fabric and white twill lining.It has eight buttonholes on each side of the front of the coat and closes with eight little buttons. The blue collar is trimmed with the regimental stripe and is lined in red, the lining is not visible on the outside. The ''basques'' (sorry, couldn't find a good translation, but I believe it is the white hem at the bottom of the coat) are also trimmed with the stripe, all the way up to the opening of the coat.

This backside view lets us see that the shoulder boards (or shoulder-flashes) are devoid of all ornementations despite the widespread custom of adding white or mixed with red tufts of wool. At the height of the waist, we find the ''hat'' trimmed with the regimental stripe. The very pointy ''basques'' are sown down and are also trimmed with the regimental stripe. We can see that there are four buttonholes on the pockets instead of the three usually found for the scottish regiments.

Detail of the facing (sleeve). Very adjusted, these do not have a slit (or vent) as the regulation specifies. The four buttonholes, that reaches all the way down the facing, have button from the great module (Not sure about the great module part, somebody more knowledgeable will probably chime in...), flat, simply embossed with the number of the regiment: ''42'' like all the other buttons on the coat.


Done. Now, somebody send me a tweed kilt for my translation fee...

I want to say "module" is talking about the regiment, just using how it is placed in context.

That is a great find, I'd think reenactors will go crazy over that.

I believe the pattern for the lace on the jacket is called "Bastion" pattern.
