I believe the hardest part of kilt making or anything is getting over the "I can't." Once you can see it in your mind the job is over half done.

    That looks great!

My box arrived home from kilt kamp so I can continue working on mine. Hope to have it finished later this coming week.

I finished the kilt I started in Kilt Kamp. The tartan is Earl of St. Andrews. Now that the rain and clouds have also moved out of my part of Ohio I had a chance to get out for some photographs. The primary issue I had in making this one was getting the width of the pleats to actually end up at the desired measurement. I ended up with practically no taper from hip to waist. The waist is about an inch and a half too large. I have the straps pulled in all the way on both sides. The hips came out to the recorded measurement. Looks like I got the center line about where it should be front and rear.

Looking at the front apron I have a question. See the photo where I show the distance to the edge of the apron left and right side. Should A = B?

I also noticed the left edge of the apron shows the pleat is trying to turn out. I have a picture looking straight down.

This is the first kilt I have made. I will be starting number 2 before long. Concentrating on getting the pleat taper correct on the next one and avoiding any errors anyone may see in this one.

I had to include a picture of the photographer:

    Mike,
    The kilt looks great. Congratulations.

In reference to the front apron --- If you will look on page 56 of Barb's book where she describes the laying our of the aprons she says.

" Then, measure half the apron waist measurement plus 1" to the right of the center front line, and make a chalk mark."

She explained this adding of 1 inch extra to the outer apron right edge to insure that the outer apron will completely cover the under apron.

The turning out or rolling of the pleat is not unusual - I cure it on my own kilts by lifting the inner fold of the under apron pleat up so there is a small triangle of doubled fabric visible above the top of the apron.

That pulls the pleat back into line.

On an already sewn kilt I think that a horizontal dart several inches below the waist (where the outline will not be visible though the apron) will do the trick. It should not need to be very large - but you can fold, tack and try on to see how much needs to be done to fit the kilt around your shape.
