    Re: Ditch Flower of Scotland?

OK. sorry for the bad aim on the site I was trying to reference earlier. (That thing with the babies talking was a scream, but had nothing to do with the subject at hand.)

Here is the site I was trying to put up:

Jeeze, but am I the only one who remembers that prior to football hooligans adopting "Flower of Scotland" -- a rather mindless tune in my opinion -- that we used to stand up at the end of the movies, etc. and sing "Scots Wha' Hae"? Wendy Wood (of Waverley Steps fame) would spin her in grave at the thought of something so insipid as "Flower of Scotland" being insisted upon as a "national anthem" by today's crop of noveau-nationalists.

As Jock Sinclair once said, "Yon's a cheesey tune."

I really do wish people would do a bit of research before spouting nonsense.

    And

Read it - All of it! Not just the bits that please you!

    Verse 6 indeed.

This is not the first time this has come up here at XMTS.

I will say exactly what I said the last time:

If you want to hate the English - OK
I can do nothing against racism.
But have the courtesy to hate us for something real -
Not something made up out of your own head.

I too am sorry that you have had to say what you have said Chas, but YOU ARE QUITE RIGHT!

I think much of the problem lies in that many people from outwith the UK completely fail to understand the difference between the fairly robust Micky taking and anything more sinister, between Scotland and England and indeed various sporting events are hard fought, but sectarianism between Scotland and England is in reality a myth. I do, however, concede that on occasion this two way robust Micky taking is taken just a bit too far.

As in many things, those from outwith a country----any country------would on most occasions be best to keep their thoughts to themselves and yes, by all means ask questions, as it is the inaccurate perceptions and judgements that are often so dangerous.

    Re: Ditch Flower of Scotland?

    Gentleman,

I think someone has got hold of the wrong end of the stick on this thread, because I have been through it again this morning and can see no post that advocates hatred for the English, quite the reverse in fact. For myself I have never regarded verse 6 of GSTQ(K) as being officially sanctioned however informally. There has for at least 30 years been a recurring discussion in Scotland about a specifically Scottish anthem (engaged in by Scots who believe in the Union and those who believe in Independence), and as stated some of us would prefer such an anthem to define who we are or aspire to become, not one that looks to ancient victories against our nearest neighbour.

As to accusations of anti-English racism this is a canard I often hear which makes no sense, simply because the Scots, English, Welsh and Irish share very similar DNA. There may be some resentment against English people by some people in Scotland (not shared by me, my family or friends, I may add), but however unpleasant or wrong it is, by definition it cannot be racism. I have also heard a similar complaint made by many Scots who went south to find work. In any situation of difference (even if it is primarily cultural) you can always find those who entertain a prejudice against the 'other'.

    Any particular piece of it?

Seems to say there's more than one version of the lyrics, and that generally no more than 3 verses are sung... Oh and that it's the monarchy's national anthem...

I also don't see any hint of racism in the above posts... I am sure there are plenty of members who would count themselves as Scottish Nationalists, and probably equally as many who would consider themselves monarchists...

Maybe I'm misreading your post, but I'm not sure where you're coming from with it...
