    re-dying a leather sporran?

    G'day to the Rabble.

I don't know if I'm posting this to the right section, so if the moderators think it belongs elsewhere, please feel free to move it.

My question is this: What Price Glory is selling a Scottish ex-military brown "day sporran" (http://www.whatpriceglory.com/shopexd.asp?id=1980&bc=no). For my purposes, I'd prefer a black one since I've already made my own brown sporran. I was wondering if anyone from the Rabble owned one of these sporrans, and / or had tried to re-dye the leather?
Were you successful? Perhaps some of the more experienced leatherworkers on the list (ie: more experienced than myself) could offer some suggestions?

    regards

No input on the dye question but this review of the sporran in question, assuming it's the same one, might help.

Thanks sydnie7. It is indeed the same one, and considering that even my small hands (for a guy) might have difficulty with that sporran's size, I may rethink my position on just making myself another sporran. *sigh*

It's probably more trouble that it's worth. Unless the leather in question is either A) Veg-tanned and NOT given an acrylic finish or B) Chrome-tanned and full-grain with no sealant the dye won't evenly penetrate (or potentially soak in at all) which will leave you with either a blotchy finish or dye dried on the suface, but which hasn't sunk into the leather and which will buff off at the slightest rub (on your kilt, for instance).

If you want a black sporran for very little cash, you can get one on eBay for ~$18US. It's a low quality piece, but at least it probably won't get dye all over your kilt.

Listen to the man... He knows what he's on about. It's not worth ruining your Kilt to save a couple of quid. I'd foot the extra for a new black one.

There is a chap called 'Carse of Gowrie' on Ebay who does a reasonable line in affordable sporrans. There are also sporrans available from many other outlets such as Stillwater Kilts and he STM. to name a few.

Thanks Chas, I appreciate your thoughtful efforts. I'm a regular customer of Tandy Leather, and have already made a couple of items to wear with my kilt - when I get around to ordering it. I just haven't tried re-dying leather and wanted a presentable black sporran.
