Keep digging as there may be more. Geneology is really neat that way. Always fascinating things to find out.

As special as the Lyles are, at least in my heart, they never formed a clan of their own. The Lyles are found primarily in the lowlands, and thus did not adhere to the social order of clans. The Lyle name is usually associated with Clan Stewart, either as a sept or as an "affiliated family".

But enough nit-picking; keep digging. You never know what you are going to find on your family tree. My paternal Lyles were very working class, primarily in the textile trades, and I was very surprised to find that one of my maternal lines included many noble Lyles. That fact might have provoked some interesting discussions if i had known while my parents were still alive.

Interesting. I am familiar with the crest and motto, but that's the first time I've heard that there was a Clan Lyle. What is your source?

Eectricscotland.com cites "Scotish Clan & Family Encyclopedia", by Way and Squire, as the authority for the list of Scottish Clans shown on its website, but it does not do so correctly. Way and Squire list the Lyles in a section entitled "The Armigerous Clans And Families Of Scotland", and use only the word "family", not "clan", to describe the Lyles.

As for Wikipedia, the website is a sometimes handy source of information, but it is not usually cited as a creditable source.

As a Lyle, and also a descendent of some of the Lyles discussed by Way and Squire, I think it would be nice if there was a Clan Lyle, but it isn't so. That said, there is no shame in being connected to one of the distinguished lowland families of Scotland. Generally speaking, clans are found in the highlands, and the Lyles were from the lowlands. Had the Lyles settled in the highlands, they might have formed a clan!
