Adding vinegar to towels also causes them to pull and hold more water than simply washing them, so they actually do their job better.

I have never used Woolite, so can't comment from experience, however I have read 'never again' on some of my knitting lists after using it - I think loss of colour is one complaint.

If you want to re lanolin a garment then get it really clean first, as the last thing you want to do is to seal in the dirt or stains.

For knitted things you use a small amount of lanolin and soften it in warm water in a preserving jar, then break it up by putting the top on and shaking - this takes some effort and I suspect that adding a little detergent might speed the process, then work the results through the damp garment on a board or in a bowl.

That is how seaboot socks and oily jerseys were reproofed, I am not sure that a kilt could be done the same without getting it very creased.

In defence of Woolite, there are as many pro as there are for on Ravelry!
The important thing is to use as little soap/detergent as possible, and to rinse well.
