    Feather Plumes added to buyakilt.com

We received quite a few enquires for feather plumes over the summer, it seems they're growing quickly in popularity.

We've responded to this by sourcing a feather plume and have now listed this to the site. Link below:

I'd be interested to know if you add a feather plume to your outfit. If so, I'd love to see the pictures.

    Aren't they a restricted item?

I am rather surprised to hear you say that you added this item to your inventory because of customer demandes.

I would have thought that people would tend to stay away from "feathers in the hat" to avoid someone thinking that they are dressing like a clan chief when they don't have the right to do so.

This is a very touchy subject.

That would totally depend on the type of feather. Those don't look like eagle feathers, for instance (although I couldn't hazard a guess as to the type).

They look like pheasant to me....

Right! Unless you are an armiger, clan chief, or a clan chieftain, I don't understand why anyone would want to wear any sort of feather in their bonnet, whilst wearing Highland dress.

On the other hand, pipers often wear black cock feathers and soldiers wear hackles. I thought it was just eagle feathers that denoted rank...

Nathan, my understanding is the same as yours, however, there's little question that some people wouldn't distinguish one long feather from another. The question isn't whether it's acceptable, but rather whether it could be misleading to some folks. I choose not to mislead if I can avoid it.

That's certainly where I'm at on the one hand. On the other hand, I am hesitant to show absolute deference to the aristocrats whose ancestors cleared mine from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Are not all men created equal? A little confusion of birth rank might be healthy in a democratic society.

I go back and forth on this question all the time. But I fear any further exploration will dip too far into politics.

I've never worn a feather in my bonnet and have explored petitioning for a grant of arms. I have completely mixed feelings on this. My respect for tradition pulls me in one direction and my belief in equality pulls me in the other.
