Sporran belts

I myself have never encountered, in nearly 40 years of kilt-wearing, a Scottish-made chain that wasn't smooth as glass on the underside, by design so as not to damage the kilt.

I've seen a number of Pakistani and Indian chains that had burrs on them.

Ditto the leather portion: Scottish-made ones are smooth on the underside (the vintage ones were stitched) while I've seen Indian and Pakistani straps that had rivets that had sharp edges exposed on the underside.

That's all well and good, but the reality is that it is getting
more and more difficult to suss out the dinkum Scottish made
kit. I would rather like to own a good sporran strap with chains
that I could wear for dress, but until I'm sure that I have one that
isn't going to stuff up my kilts, a plain strap will do me.

I've got an all leather belt from Wyvern that I have started using
all the time. It has clips, but I can put the "works" on the side
towards the sporran. (Yeah, I could have got a solid strap for
my good day-wear sporran and my dress sporran, but I started
with a cheaper day sporran that didn't have the option of a
through strap. (And, FWIW, I find it easier to do the clips in
front of me rather than a buckle behind my back. I'm just lazy.
I guess.)

Tack shops carry thin leather straps that are intended as leads for horses, but make wonderful sporrans straps.

I wear straps only. I also decided I want a strap for each sporran I have. It started to prove quite expensive at 10 quid a shot, so I started making my own.

One thing I do to avoid snags with my chain is that I connect the chain's clips to each other and don't use the leather band with the D rings. I did this originally because my sporran was too low when I tightened the belt all the way but what it also accomplished was to hide the clips underneath the leather patch/loop on the back of the sporran. The sporran still hangs straight and since the chain itself is as smooth as glass, I have no worries whatsoever about snags. That tip might help the extra worried folks.

I only wear leather sporran belts...I'm just not one for the chain. Less jingle jangle in my opinion...Maybe someday I'll save up and shell out the $$$$$ for a really nice one though. Sorry for the poor photo quality.

Richard, you're so lucky in all those 40 years to never have had a problem with a sporran belt, particularly of the chain variety. I was unfortunate, in my early kilted years (not that long ago, really), to have bought a cheap sporran belt, probably from the far east, and it had burrs on it which did some damage to my acrylic kilts, and even my tank. Besides the burrs, it flaked chrome all over. What a mess that was. So, I now go with a quality leather sporran strap.

I have an ornate sporran chain as does Ham I think, it's not that they are not popular on this forum its just that they are not the first thing on the list and also that they are reserved for special occasions.

Would you post some pictures of your ornate sporran chain? I'm planning to replace my current formal sporran with something special and would like to get an ornate chain to go with it and am looking for ideas. Thanks.

Here is a close up of my sporran chain, I might get something a bit more ornate but when I picked this one up at local tartan shop it was the only option they had

I only wear leather belts, or a braided leather hanger on my kilt belt. I have never cared much for the sporran chains.

If I’m wearing a kilt belt, I’ll use the hanger with it. It’s takes an extra few seconds to move the sporran to my hip when using the hanger, but I find the hanger to be more comfortable than using a sporran with the kilt belt.

I purchased my sporrans and belts from Craigie Originals. They made their kilt and sporran belts by gluing and stitching three layers together. The outside layer is elk, while the center is a supple piece of calf leather, and the back is comprised of the loop portion of Velcro’s hook and loop material. The Velcro loops cling to the wool without harming the material.

Unfortunately, Sue Craigie closed her business last year.
