Sushi made a very telling contribution in the other thread about war crimes, pretty well telling us all that we either restrict ourselves to endless talk about kilts or take ourselves off elsewhere. I have noticed many valued contributors from the past have done just this with the result that this forum is in danger of being reduced to a pale shadow of its former self. There is no doubt that steps are being taken to exclude certain members for whatever reason and it is sad that the rules are being interpreted as they are to achieve this.

I've often disagreed with Phil in the past, and I don't use the "aye" function because I think it's silly, but I agree completely with his post #21.

This bothers me. Similarly, I have bit my tongue when people were extolling the virtues of red shoelaces in ghillie brogues. I think it would have been useful to tell the rabble that they may be perceived as a skinhead (but certainly not a Domehead) by some onlookers if they choose that particular fashion accessory, but I have been wary of taking a thread in a political direction. Would i have violated a rule had I done so? I'm actually not sure.<snip>
According to my reading of Rule 5, I think that you could state the historical fact that the Duke of Windsor was a Nazi sympathizer, as long as you did not comment on whether this was a good thing or a bad thing. Likewise, you could mention that skinheads had adopted red shoe laced ghillie brogues as part of their uniform, as long as you did not comment about whether being a skinhead was a good thing or a bad thing. Admittedly, this is very confusing.

The problem with someone alledgedly stating facts is, are they indeed facts Taking Nathans comment re red shoe laces, according to a number of websites the following list is supposedly what the wearing of different coloured shoe laces mean to skinheads
White Laces : White Pride / White Power
Red Laces : Neo-nazi OR Communist Or Socialist Or Anti-Racist
    Yellow Laces : S.H.A.R.P Or Anti-Cop
Green Laces : Homophobic Or Animal Liberation
    Purple Laces : Gay Rights
Black Laces : New boots, owner has not bought the proper colour coded laces yet
Grey Laces : Owner has not figured out yet how to keep white laces clean
There are other colours mentioned also

Most of the websites/blogs debunk these as myths and fortuantely so, otherwise what colour shoelaces would wear without someone thinking we were showing our commitment to the cause. Just as an aside I have never seen a skinhead wearing red laced ghillie brogues.

I actually thought about stating in my previous post that one might want to include perhaps a link to an article supporting the veracity of what one was suggesting. I was aware of the Duke of Windsor's well known Nazi leanings. I actually had never heard of the skinhead connection to ghillie brogues. But good point. If stating an historical fact, definitely include a link to supporting documentation.

Agreed, there needs to be some discretion based on the overall conversation direction in a given thread and not knee jerk reaction to a flag

It seems like nitpicking when that sort of thing goes on, I feel it stifles conversation and community.

On another forum I'm a supporting member of there is a section available to paying members only, and in that area is a thread called "the tap room" that was started years ago by a bored member stuck working on a holiday night, the thread has morphed into a virtual version of a pub, people talking about the days events, asking each other for garden planting advice, the game on tv, pest control, you name it! In there there are no hard line rules, they largely police themselves and it has built a tight knit community, many in there I consider my friends and have had the occasion to meet several in person and they indeed felt like old friends despite being our first actual meeting. That sort of interaction here seems somehow distant. I feel that it is in part because members are leery of posting anything outside the box because of fear of a rule infraction.

More often than not I'm here for "nuts and bolts kilt information" such as what to wear to a given event or gathering, examples of how to properly wear something, advice on a possible purchase or project, and so forth, but if I'm feeling like I want to hang out with like-minded individuals and talk about "this and that" over a pint or a dram, I head elsewhere.

    And that is a shame

This place shouldn't be a kilted Wikipedia page, I feel taking a wait and see stance instead of a rules are rules approach would greatly improve the sense of community and lessen the wiki feel.

    Rule #12
    - Off Topic Threads & Posts -
    a) The topic of discussion on X Marks is the kilt. Threads or posts not related to the kilt are restricted to either the Events or Community Forums.
    b) Posts to existing threads must keep to the topic set by the Original Poster (OP). Posts which take a thread off the original topic may be removed.

We already have a section for that kind of discussion in the events or community forums of the site, subject to the normal rules of the forum.
Have a look through the Miscellaneous section, you will see threads on knitting, ettiquette, scouts, bicycles, non celtic music, the weather, TV shows and movies, disasters, sports and more. What more do you want?

A too stringent application of the "rules" lead to longstanding and well liked members (like Jock Scot) and others like myself (over a recent issue with a "potential problem" that I still don't really understand) to restrain their postings on this site for fear of possibly breaking the rules or upsetting people. Like Phil said in his post on this thread, it's sad.

Regarding the "everything must be about the kilt" rule...

I've been warned that posting about Celtic Music in the Celtic music forum was inappropriate if it had nothing to do with the kilt. I've also been warned that the History and Heritage sub-forum was not meant for the history and heritage of the Highlanders, Scots, or Celts, but rather the History and Heritage of the kilt. I think these sections would be much better than the Miscellaneous section to post a thread about a great Gaelic singer or Scottish fiddler. I have done so and been thanked by members yet I have been warned that these are the inappropriate places for such posts. I find that sad. Those sub-threads are pretty dead as a result when they could be active and interesting.

Regarding the red laces, as a point of clarification, I didn't mean red laces in ghillie brogues in particular but in any shoe. I had heard that mentioned before but had forgotten. When I saw the thread about red laces in ghillie brogues, I googled where I could buy them and inadvertently ended up on a website I hope to never view again. It was a forum much like this one in structure but dedicated to white supremacy *barf*. They were casually discussing where to buy red laces to show their allegiance. I don't have a source to footnote aside from first hand experience. Obviously I exited from this website, which is probably illegal in Canada, asap but it left me very hesitant to ever put red laces in anything. That's not how I want to be perceived.

Nathan, your warnings re your posts in the celtic music threads amaze me. I have read all those threads and followed links that you have posted about the music and have always found them entertaining and informative. A couple have given me appreciation of several artists I had never heard of. I have always thought that your celtic music posts were exactly in the right section of the forum. I hope to see others as you come across them. Cheers
