    MacMillan Hunting pleating options

    Hi,

Thinking of having a kilt made in Macmillan Hunting tartan and trying to decide how to have it pleated. Does anybody have photographs of the various options, stripe, sett and so forth? Would also welcome any and all advice.

Thanks Steve, but I'm not recognising that tartan. Is it a MacMillan? Really the MacMillan Hunting I'm looking for, I've altered the thread title accordingly.

Steve: Nice of you to do that. All the pleating options look good to me, but were it mine I might choose "sett".

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

I'm quite sure that our "resident MacMillans" shall chime in here soon as well.

    Hi Harry,

I have two MacMillan Hunting tartan kilts, one in 13 oz House of Edgar Modern, the other in 15 oz. custom "reproduction"(weathered) colors by DC Dalgleish. I can assure you that neither of them look, thank GOD, like what appears to be pictures of a Buchanan tartan that Steve posted above . Both are pleated to the sett which does not provide you with much visual difference than the apron of the kilt, so photos will not be that helpful to you.

Best of luck with your kilt. I can highly recommend Bonnie Heather Greene (one of our advertisers) and Kathy Lare for their excellent work.

He has photos of the Modern Hunting MacMillan pleated to the stripe (double yellow) and sett. Another option would be to pleat to one of the broader red stripes on green. This would tone down the effect of the double yellow stripes.

Are you thinking about the modern or ancient color scheme? In the ancient color scheme the orange tends to fade into the green, and the yellow is not as vibrant against the lighter blue, so your pleating choice might really depend on your color scheme.

You can never go wrong pleating to the sett...

    Thanks to everybody for replies.

It's the Hunting Modern I was thinking of, particularly what it would look like pleated to one of the broader red stripes. Reading through the posts I believe Harold Cannon was considering a kilt in MacMillan Hunting Modern pleated like this, not sure of his decision though.

I like the contrast between apron and pleats when pleated to stripe and it can look impressive. As I only intend buying one kilt I'd like to be sure what it will look like. Little surprised nobodies written a programme to mock this up, must be doable?

I've found a couple of photos of the pleats of the MacMillan Hunting Modern and the Reproduction/Weathered that I own Harry.

Here's the weathered (excuse the car crease)

    And the Modern:

And, just as an added bonus, here's one of the Old Sett in Weathered colors pleated to the olive block

Not sure that these help at all, but there you have it!
