Culloden anniversary

I am surprised to find that no one has mentioned that today is the anniversary of the battle of Culloden Moor on April 16, 1746.

So many died and the Gael's way of life changed forever.

Remember them today.

opened up the forum to see if anyone mentioned culloden. i am glad you did. my 6x grandpa was captured there. he was 14.

sure. i know a little about it. if you google "William Lawson Scottish Rebel" you will find pictures of his grave in Virg. etc. he was born 26jun1731 in Montrose. captured 16apr1746. held at Clackmannan, then Stirling and finally Carlisle. 20 prisoners would draw numbers, whoever drew the target number would stand trial, the other 19 would get a pardon and then sent to the colonies or the Indies as an indentured servant. william drew his number @ 19aug1746. he arrived at Port North Potomac, Maryland on 5aug1747 aboard the ship Gildart. he was 16 yrs and 2 months at this point. he spent about a year as some man's slave and then ran away. he ended up in the area of Snowflake, Va, where he is buried. the Lawson's were a sept of the Maclaren clan.

I spent the day in solitude high in the hills above Loch Muick. Many of the glens are all but empty now and one can only imagine what they must have been like when full of people.

I was there at 15
with family my uncle tried to tell me ..I looked at the things in the ..cottage museum ..I had no feel for the volume/many men both sides involved or what a combat close in could be like shredding bodies and gore and then the bayonetting ..I think he mentioned the rain ..and the wind and cold ....what got me ..was seeing people laying in mass graves ..that unnerved me . The idea you had so many dead ..they were dumped into a trench like ..grave . It was a lot like when I see WW2 of the ..camps being dumped into trenches .

I have seen museums ..claymores ..tartans ..bonnets ..food ..songs ..muskets ..even tomahawks ..

I have tried to learn what I can since then .
