To the sett and red stripe were never in the race. Alternate beat white by a nose.

It is actually fortunate that you prefer To The Stripe. The MacKenzie (Seaforth) Tartan is Black Watch with a Red and White overcheck. The Black Watch Tartan and its derivatives are huge Sett Tartans. Each pleat eats up a huge amount of fabric, and I ordered exactly 4 yards of double-width fabric based on your hip circumference.

I started laying out your kilt this afternoon and I am going to have just enough fabric to make this kilt. You will get back the short, narrow piece left over from the center of the fabric after I make your waistband, beltloops and buckle tabs.

But I hope you were not planning of making matching Tartan flashes from any left over fabric.

Nice tartan. I hope that you enjoy your new kilt. Wear it regularly and with pride.

BTW, with that particular tartan I would have chosen pleating to the set (as Steve said, lucky you didn't)!

Pleating to the white would have eased this concern, though, since you could have two pleats per sett. I think the white stripe on the pleats really pops.

He got a vote to the alternating from me because I really am partial to red although I did not like pleating to the red stripe.

I think you made a great choice with the alternating stripes although they all look nice. It keeps the all of the colours in play and balances nicely. I agree the white pops, but you still have that pop every second pleat, giving you more dark between the light. A fine pleating choice and a very nice tartan.

I think you made a good choice .... I like that tartan....will have to consider that for my next kilt. I look forward to seeing a photo of the final creation. Perhaps Steve could take time occasionally to snap a photo and post it here for all of us to envy!

I had some time to pleat up MacKenzies Kilt today.

Here it is pleated and ready to put in the pockets and sew the Fell.

When I said that there was not going to be much fabric left over I wasn't lying.

Here is the small piece cut off the outer apron side.

And here is the small piece cut off the under apron side.

I usually try my best to make the outer and under aprons the same but on this kilt that just was not possible.

Now, on to the sewing machine.
