Lightbulb DFW Kilt Night: Friday 27-June-2014, McKinney, TX

Please bear with me if I’m not doing this right, since I’m still a newbie (though this post might be the one to knock the “New Member” tag off my name)…

I’d like to propose a Kilt Night on the historic McKinney square for Friday 27-June-2014. Ideally, this will be sort of a “progressive” kilt night with 2 (or more) locations. Here’s the initial concept:

    Phase 1
I play with a band called The Poor Kings, and we’re playing at Spoons Café from 6:30ish to 9:30ish (no, we’re not a Celtic band). The menu is a bit of a new take on some good ‘ol down home classics – and the deserts are also fantastic. It would be great to see some of you there before you're ready to move on to phase 2. If we get an idea of how many will be able to come to Spoons I’ll try to get a table for the group ahead of time.

    Phase 2
At your leisure, take a walk just down the square and around the corner to the next stop called The Pub. This is an Irish pub and sister bar to the infamous Fillmore Pub in Plano.

    Phase 2.5? (optional)
If we just need to go somewhere else, or are feeling extra rambunctious, we can walk around the square to Churchill’s, an English pub. There are pictures of men wearing kilts in their website gallery, so I figure it’s safe for the X Marks crowd.

McKinney may not be the single most centrally located place for all of our DFW members on a Friday night, but the square is a nice place to hang out, and I’m sure we’ll have a lot of fun… plus, I’ll already be there anyway. I’m looking forward to meeting as many of you in person as I can.

Fun Fact: McKinney is the county seat of Collin County. Both are named in honor of Collin McKinney, the son of Scottish immigrants, and one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836.

Spent a bit of time in McKinney.

Spoons does have nice desserts. As for Churchill's they are owned by a brother and sister from the UK and since they hold a Burn's Night (been to it) I can testify that the owners have no issues with kilts

So what kind of music do y'all play?

Sorry, McKinney is too far a hike for me on a Friday after work. It would've been fun because that's my birthday!

The Poor Kings play a unique mix of original music and our own versions of some songs from the past 3 or 4 decades. Style wise, it's a combination of acoustic folk and soulful rock and pop. It is hard to describe, but we have a lot of fun.

Sounds fun, but I have plans elsewhere that evening. Maybe next time.

If there's no pic, it didn't happen...

I didn't see any other kilts tonight but it was a good night. It turned into a surprise birthday party of sorts for two band members with birthdays this month. Lots of friends, and lots of positive comments on the kilt. I apologize for the poor iPhone photo taken by a friend. I haven't been kilted in public many times, and this was my first kilted performance.
American Heritage Tartan, cheap sporran, tan hose, Lovat blue flashes, paratrooper boots... Lots of black, but my wardrobe is still a bit limited after my weight loss. And, of course the profile oriented photo will be posted in the sideways landscape orientation from my phone... Sorry about that, too.

Sorry, I just missed this. I'm in McKinney and frequent all of these locations. I just joined the group today (6/30) and just missed it.
