First, let me say that I love your screen name!

To answer your question, it looks a lot like a beret I've seen just shaped more like a bonnet. I can't direct you to a particular stop or website but vintage thrift shops and ebay would be where I'd start my search.

Try Norma with ScottishandMoor on Etsy. She made me a large burgundy bonnet last year that could probably be shaped like that. I have her making me a balmoral presently.

An expedient solution, if you aren't concerned with matching the color, are the larger diameter berets to be found here:

Look particularly at the Argentinian and French Chasseur styles. It's a good company to do business with, and shipping is fairly fast, considering the point of origin is New Zealand.

Gloria at Historical Caps could probably reproduce it for you. http://www.historicalcaps.net/index.htm She made me one in a very similar shade, Hedwick wool, and finished it the diameter I asked for.The cap in your picture is at least 12-inches in diameter, I'd say. Her delivery time is pretty fast, and the cost reasonable.

Keep in mind a bonnet as in the picture will not have a lined headband, and if knit of unworsted wool will be somewhat scratchy to wear. But, I believe unworsted wool, like Herdwick, is the only thing that will give you the full look of that bonnet.

Perhaps it's on Youtube, but if you can check out the bonnet worn by Errol Flynn in the early scenes of Master of Balantrea you might find additional inspiration for a floppy bonnet.

Diana Gabaldon sells a pattern for it on her website. I don't know the address off-hand or how much it costs but my wife just finished (almost) one for me this morning. I know that there are three sizes to the pattern and that the bigger ones look less like a beret. As soon as it finishes drying and she gets the ribbon put in it, I'll get a photo of it.

On looking closer at the bonnet in the picture, there is clearly visible texture of the knitting. The cap is not very heavily felted, which may account for the extra floppy look.

Just a note to say that you may not find a matching or exact commercial version of that cap -- it may be a one-off item created by the show's costume department. They can be crafty that way.
