    The Clan Gunn

Are there any GUNN's on the board?
I love the history of this clan and I am proud to be a part of it.

Wilson from Aberdeenshire member of the Gunn Clan?

I am new to XMTS but my Wilson's are from Aberdeenshire. The reason I joined the forum was to try to figure out the history which was lost to us. I believe I am a GUNN clan member! I just don't know how to confirm it. 6 generations prior to me my ancestor Charles Wilson was born in Kinnethmont (1758), his son Andrew was the last born in Scotland (1780 Methlick) : the move to Canada occurred. I joined the forum to figure out Clan and Tartan so I could determine the "right kilt" to pursue. Hopefully I'm on the right track!

I bought a Modern Gunn kilt in a sale in Selkirk last March and am very fond of it. I was wearing it Co Sligo where I hang out a lot and was getting some funny looks (more so than usual when kilted around Ireland). A night or two later I saw a shop window in Sligo town displaying the uniform for the local Ursuline Convent - the skirt was in Modern Gunn. I don't wear Gunn around Sligo anymore.

My maternal Grandfather's family are Williamsons, who I think are connected to the Gunn Clan way back in the 1700's

From what I've been reading, the Clan Swan was assimilated into the Clans Gunn and MacQueen way back.

    Heather,
I'm going to be a little bit pedantic. There is not a "Clan Swan" though there is a relatively recently invented Swan tartan. And "sept" associations are often rather recently made up by sellers of tartan/kilts to increase sales. Thus Swan could be associated with either MacQueen (which means "son of Sven") OR Gunn (because of descent from another Viking named Sven) but one can't be in both clans. This thread might be of interest to Swans/Gunns/MacQueens

Your right. Maybe they were just a large family at one point? I truly did not mean so say that a Swan are both Gunn and MacQueen together, I just meant to say that both claim Swan as a sept. Who knows!?! Your way is better, 'or' would have been better. There is and never has been a Clan Swan. My mistake.

That link is what brought me to XMTS in the first place, when I was running around the internet Googling my last name. I guess we all just want to belong?
