    Looking for a book

    Greetings,

Years ago when I was beginning my research into Highland dress, I happened upon a great little pocketbook (or better yet, sporran-book) in my local library. It was covered in blue & green tartan material and with an image of a celtic brooch on the cover. The title was something like "A gentleman's guide to Highland Dress". My guess is that it was written in the 1940-50s. It was well illustrated with several line drawings a few color plates of various tartans. I made a photo-copy which I lost years ago and I would love to find copy for my library. Internet searches have provided me no leads. I'm hoping "The Rabble" can point me in the right direction.

    All the best!

One such book that fits the cover description and some of the internal content is 'Tartan and Highland Dress' by G.R. MacKinnon of Dunakin. Publisher, Collins: Glasgow & London. However, this book was first published in 1961 so might not be the one you are looking for. Still is very informative and for some could be a worthwhile source of information into the dress of the Scottish Highlander.

    YES!
A small but great book. Essential to me.
You will find several copies at Ebay or preowned-book shops.

That sounds like it to me as well. My copy is soft-leather bound with a brooch on the cover. It's a very informative and well-written little book.

Thanks to all of you for your quick & helpful replies. After a quick search for the correct title, I was able to locate a nice copy at an online bookstore. The picture provided by the store was a perfect match for the book I remembered.

    Thanks again!

Great you were able to get it!

Isn't the internet wonderful? I've done a similar thing, picked up several favourite old books which I've loaned out or otherwise lost over the years.

I get the used beat-up inexpensive copies... I'm a reader, not a collector!
