    How to know a McDonald

I've been kilting the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska these past few days. Today when boarding an excursion boat, a crew member, a half-Scotch gal with a brogue asked The Question as I came aboard. For once I didn't have a ready answer. She decided everything must be in working order.

Then, turning to the crowd on the deck she asked loudly, "How do you tell a Scotsman's clan? Lift his kilt and if you see two quarter-pounders then he's a McDonald." That was a new one on me. There was a round of laughter, then we all went whale watching.

I heard that some 30 years ago on a jobsite in Phoenix. The Scottish foreman reacted to my name and said, "How do you tell what clan a Scotsman belongs to? If you reach up under his kilt and grab ahold of a quarter pounder he's a Macdonald."

About the same story I guess.

    Riverkilt,

Thirty years ago, someone might have gotten away with that solution. Today, there would be legal charge. The times, they are a changin".

Yeah, it's an old joke but I take a dim view of the whole idea. (Don't encourage 'em and all that.)

    I'd rewrite the ending...

"How do you tell what clan a Scotsman belongs to? You reach up under his kilt and grab...
"...and if you wake up in Intensive Care, it was a McDonald." (If you don't wake up at all, it might have been a <your clan here> !

Jeez Louise....ease up....it was a well meaning joke, told by a true Scotsman, prompted by him learning my name when we were introduced....yes, 30 years ago. Of course it was also a play on McDonald's hamburgers. If one gets picky the quarter pounder part isn't a compliment.

Bottom line it was told in a very friendly manner and accepted in the same way.
