Afraid I missed this first time around. I didn't think that the kilt saw any deliberate action during WW2. Had heard that the pipes were played and that there was a fracas after highlanders had changed into kilts for dinner

The kilt saw official action in France 1939/40. I think the Cameron Highlanders claim the distinction of the last Regiment to officially wear the kilt in action(France 1940). Unofficially though, the kilt was worn in action by those(individuals usually) that were able to adjust the rules to suit themselves. A healthy trait of adapting dress regulations that the British Army excel in during wartime, when given half an opportunity!

It must have been a sight, bullets flying everywhere and there.. a lone piper on the beachhead, what did the men hear that day? Perhaps the sound of home? I'd like to think the skirling of those pipes helped raise the hearts and minds of those who made it off that beach, as well as those who did not....
