That's a great article. The cavalry-stetson thing has very little basis in US Army history, especially when considering how the hats are shaped. I spent twelve years as a cavalry scout in armor and cavalry units. I never bought a stetson and never will. Only the 11th ACR (which happens to be my old regiment) wears a hat that resembles traditional campaign hats.

The Blackhorse wear the khaki drab colored campaign hat that the regiment wore when it was established in February 1901. Here is a photo of modern troopers wearing the hats:

Here's another photo. The soldier at right is Colonel Lanier Ward, 65th Colonel of the Regiment. In 1990-91, he and I served together in the same scout platoon in Desert Shield and Storm.

My grandfather joined the Cavalry about 1902. He served under Pershing in the Philippines, on the border chasing
Pancho Villa, and in France. I have a picture of him wearing the drill instructor/Mountie/Smoky Bear style. Don't
know whether or not it was made by Stetson, but it was issued, or he wouldn't have owned it. He was not one to
    spend unnecessarily.
