    Watering whisky

I have been asked a few times why I don't add water, and it seems I am in the minority. I have tried adding a few drops to blends and single malts, but find I don't like what they do to the flavour. I like it as it comes. Is that really so odd?

Here's the bottom line as far as I'm concerned about whisky - It's YOUR whisky, enjoy it any way you like! Now admittedly, I'd cringe a bit to see someone mixing cola or soda with a fine, old single malt, but that's their choice to make!

I find that a wee bit (literally a few drops) of water can "open up" rather than "water down" a whisky, especially with the higher alcohol, cask strength whiskies. When I'm trying something new I'll have it neat at first, then add a couple of drops of water until I find the perfect (for me) balance. It certainly can enhance nosing the whisky and allows you to enjoy the little nuances that you might otherwise miss due to the strong alcohol content.

Just my $.02 worth. Your mileage may vary!
