    Genealogy software.

Did a search and didn't find anything on here about programs. I googled it and it seems they all have some difficult things to work with. There isn't one that just really stands out. What do you guys use?

I have previously done most of my work on ancestry.com but can't find a place where is saves it into a Gencom file for export.

I use the free software provided by the LDS Church on their website. It easily allows me to make a gedcom file and also backups. There are flaws in it, as there are in most any other such program, but it works well for me and the price is really good! It could use a better online users manual but it is fairly intuitive in usage and you can easily find others who use the software. Can always call the church, I imagine, if you had a really in-depth question.

I use My Family Tree, it is free, and available here.

It works fine for me and I like the user interface. I haven't had need of any advaced features so far, and it is able to accurately reflect my family with some spouse getting divorced and then marrying back into the family with a sibling of the person they divorced!!!

I have been using Family Tree for five years now with Ancestry and the Family Search (LDS) site as well, all three working well together. It is time consuming work but there is no doubt that some info will be wrong. I just found out that the last census testimony from my great grandfather had him being born in a different place in Wales than he'd noted on his death bed. So much for accuracy. Still, between the various online sites, one can get a good picture of the family. The pride we have of our heritage will never be knocked by small details that could be wrong. We are still each individually awesome and that's what counts!

I got a free copy of Family Tree Maker 2005 some years ago as a demo version. Currently, it's limited to some basic functions. If I reinstall it, I get full functionality for two weeks.

It can import/export gedcom-formatted files, link to online content (Ancestry.com), produce custom reports, etc.

    Hi,

I use Legacy, current version is 8.0 (I believe). I like it, have used it for several years, but don't consider myself an expert, by any means. I do research on Ancestry, and it's relatively easy to export your tree in GEDCOM format. Just click on 'Help', and search for "export" or "GEDCOM". It will give you step-by-step instructions.

    Good luck!

I've got all myresearch on Ancestry.com.
I bought Roots Magic software and started with it, but found it very slow going. I have more or less given up on it and I can't see me ever building the level of information on Roots Magic which I already hold on Ancestry.

I use MyHeritage Family Tree. It's a free version, with everything I need.

You can pay to have it directly link to online resources as well at various price points. It's Windows-based, I don't think they have a Mac version. It can do various chart printing and save/export to GED.

They also have a mobile version for iOS and Android.
