Alternative to the "No you can't wear a kilt to my wedding"

This past weekend I attended my nephews wedding in Tulsa Oklahoma. Jennifer and I had a great time seeing family and all and consider the trip a success. Looking back it has been quite an ordeal getting outfitted for the occasion. A month and a half ago I looked closely at the invite and noticed "Black Tie". Of course, with bride and family permission, I like to wear my kilt but my sister said "My dumb conservative son asked that you don't wear one." I can go along with that and told her kilt wearers are considerate of peoples request. I also informed her that besides kilts I only have tweed, lots of it. She said a nice suite would be fine but again I told her TWEED. I figured I'd find a way to get decked out without spending money on a slop shop, off the rack tux. Jennifer also wanted to create something to wear in the form of a nice cocktail dress appropriate for black tie. Her venture took her into adjusting and using a 1955 pattern that turned out great. I turned to history and an era of clothing I like, Victorian. Well it went down to the wire and Jennifer was up the night before we left, all night long, finishing her hem. Below is proof of accomplishment and an alternative to someone saying "No kilt please."

Jennifer made her dress and did a fantastic job. She used very nice silk taffeta. I made my vest, coat, pants and tie using Laughing Moon and Butterick patterns. The url below takes you to sewing pattern review forum where I showed my work and progress on the outfit.

So next time someone says no kilt at a wedding get creative and put a head turner of an outfit together... mostly have fun doing it and enjoy the party.

Anyone have alternatives to the kilt please add to this thread.

Top hat and tails are a great, "If I can't wear my kilt, then..." alternative. Good for the both of you looking so smashing.

Y'all look great. I've been informed I am not to wear my kilt to my nephew's wedding this summer. I'm not talented enough to make an outfit, so I'll just wear a suit that has been haning in the closet for several years.

I think you both look great!
I am also glad that you found a solution. My solution would have been simply to decline the invitation. I really don't understand why others think they have the right to dictate how others choose to dress.

Looking very swanky, my friend. Big props for stepping outside the boring wedding box and not being yet another dude in a lame rental tux. And honestly, I think this is cooler than a kilt anyway.

Looks great! And, if it was a daytime wedding, you were probably the only person wearing the proper attire of a morning coat instead of a tux (which is for evening wear).
