    Edinburgh Scotland

I live just 55 miles from Edinburgh and as you may already know it is the one city in Scotland which I prefer to avoid. It had been a while since my last visit to Edinburgh but today my wife and I took our German guests there for a day out. Let me be your guide to central Edinburgh in the Festival season, here we are in Princes Street, outside Waverley railway station.

First stop a whisky shop on the Royal Mile to buy in supplies for our forthcoming Clan Cunningham tent at Cumnock Highland Games on 21st August. Do shop around, we found these £1 each cheaper in another shop after we had already purchased.
My wife and stepdaughter on the Castle Esplanade, which currently forms the Edinburgh Tattoo Arena, not something I would ever wish to attend but the tourists seem to love it.

The Royal Mile was busy. Plenty of kilts on shop assistants, tour guides, pipers etc but some kilts in the wild too:-

    Watching You I am

The crowds are easily amused but the performers look bored

    German Kiltie

Who would feel at home here in Edinburgh

Most of the eateries looked rather hectic

But we found a quiet though expensive place for lunch just off the Royal Mile

By now my guests had seen quite enough of mad Edinburgh and decided they would rather spend the afternoon on Portobello beach.

Thanks for posting these Alex. I'm regretting not going to Edinburgh for the Festival this August. I've been a couple of times and the buzz is mighty, as is the cost of all the shows. Hope all is well.

    Unhappy Stb

The photos brought back many memories of Auld Reekie and my time stationed at Redford and The Castle. Your commentary was sour grapes to my ears. As my mother used to say, "if you have nothing good to say, SHUT YER GUB". IMHO.
    Aye Yours.

    I think Edinburgh is great!

While I have not been fortunate enough to visit the Highlands or other Scottish cities, I found Edinburgh to be a great city. Granted, I was there twice in April, and the numbers of tourists was probably lower than in the summer.
I really enjoyed walking up Arthur's Seat, and the last time I was there it had a dusting of snow. Also, and I know some might not agree, I find Edinburgh a much prettier city than London.
