Small 1"x1" (approximately) digital swatches...the kind that can be found and downloaded from the STA or almost any purveyor of Clan tartans...duplicated and carefully pasted together in CorelDrawX4, then printed on glossy paper. Cut to size. Lay into the back of a clear Spigan case and then insert and reinsert phone as many times as it takes to get it in with the paper still straight and in position.
I think you could do it with a lightweight tartan fabric, as well, but the sett would be so large that it wouldn't look as good. Also the fabric might slide around so much you'd never get the phone in the case with the fabric still in position.
I was thinking that, next time, I might do the same thing but with the tartan at an angle and a photograph of the Clan badge or other Clan heraldry in the middle.

I, too, have a tartan smartphone case (in my personal tartan), but as my only camera is on the phone, taking a photo would be an ordeal! I saved myself a bit of the work and ordered it from Zazzle.com when they had a sale.
I'll see if a friend can snap a picture of mine in the near future.
