Montreal police ticket for carrying traditional knife.

Perhaps an article of interest to those of us who contemplate wearing the sgian dubh. I will note that I am all for tradition and the wear of traditional items. Yet, I do respect that some (I said some) others outside the culture might not share that. If there is a bylaw concerning blades so be it. Many of us have been scrutinized for something that would be completely outside of our character since the opportunal observer could not possibly know us. But McCarthy makes some good points regarding upcoming Scot themed events.
Not posting this to wage a cultural identity debate nor to rain fire on police for actions within, it appears, upholding the law. Just some food for thought as we head out the door kilted. http://news.nationalpost.com/news/ca...itional-dagger

Unfortunate occurrence. I hope he contests the ticket and gets his sgian dubh returned. At certain public occasions, I either leave mine at home or wear my sgian bru....

I hope there's a professional exemption in Montreal for chefs who may carry an entire roll of knives around with them, some up to 9-10" long, or Scouts with their multi-functional pocket knives. This is just bizarre.

I really wish I could say I am surprised at seeing Jeff get targeted by the Police in Quebec but sadly cannot. I was never a member of the Watch but have played along side them on occasion and found Jeff to be a very good player and a well spoken gentleman. I think he is a credit to the regiment and the Canadian Forces in general and was likely targeted just for how he was dressed and who he is. The sgian dubh was just an easy way to take a cheap shot at him. He just had the bad luck of having the wrong police officers come across him.

    Kilt Kops Are Real

So, apparently the dreaded Kilt Kops do exist, at least in Montreal.

I'm sure this will generate some discussion for us all.

Yup. You're the third member that's linked to an article about this. I've seen it in a couple of Montreal papers - my best guess? The cops are going to get a black eye and go their merry way.

He should challenge the charge, I have been informed by a police officer that it is not illegal as it is not considered concealed. If you do carry a concealed knife; it is not illegal if you inform police that you have it on you. Here in Northern Ontario it is hunting season, lots of hunters have buck knives on the belts..

A sgian dubh is a fixed blade and is not a weapon until you make it one; it is a tool.
