A kilted soldier's story.

I hesitate to post this link because a couple of members will grumble about minor errors and complain about the writing. If so inclined, don't bother to click the link. Nitpicking is childish and a lot of other members might like to read it, so here's an interesting little article about a decorated soldier from a kilted regiment.

I had the pleasure of bumping into Tommy MacPherson from time to time -----he lived nearby---- and without a doubt he was one of those quick witted, modest, skilful, unorthodox, lucky and immensely brave soldiers that the British Army seem to find at a time of need.

Some more names off the top of my head, of the same ilk that some here might be interested in reading about.These brave fellows are just some of many that could(should) also be mentioned.

Simon Fraser.
Paddy Mayne.
Bill Stirling and his brother David.
"Mad Jack" Churchill.
Adrian de Wiart.
Orde Wingate.

Apart from Wingate, I had the pleasure and honour of meeting them all on the list.

Not forgetting Captain Donald Roy of the Cameron Highlanders (Liverpool Scottish) and No. 2 Commando, 5 Troop. A veteran of the St. Nazaire raid, who got permission from the War Office for his command to wear the kilt as part of their battledress.

Now, did he parachute in a kilt? That would be even more impressive!

I think Jeffrey Archer used MacPherson's ruse to convince a German division to surrender as the basis for a similar story in one of his books. I will have to go through my collection to see which book.

The book reports he did parachute in the kilt.
Remember that a parachute normally has two crotch straps and would bind up the kilt somewhat, so nothing would be showing and there would be little of the kilt "flying"
